Where to Get Vegan Ice Cream in New York?

Being a vegan in New York is relatively easier compared to being a vegan in.. let's say.. Arizona. Everywhere you go there is always something to satisfy your vegan craves and that includes ice cream. There are plenty places in New York City where you can get vegan ice cream. Here is the list!

1. Ciao Bella
Here you can try up to 22 unique flavors of vegan sorbet sweetened with evaporated cane juice. What's even more exciting is that you can buy it by the scoop or by the pint.
2. Van Leeuwen
They have 2 vegan ice creams here: “Michel Cluizel chocolate” and “Cold Ground, Oak Barrel Aged” vanilla. The classic vanilla and chocolate. I have tried the chocolate one and it was yummy!

3. Klein's Ice Cream House
Located in Brooklyn, this ice cream parlor is famous for their many flavors of vegan ice cream. They have 2 options: soft serve (vanilla and chocolate) and hard ice cream. The idea of having vegan ice cream is because of the kosher diet. If you are on kosher diet and you had meat, you have to wait for another six hours before eating diary. But who wants to wait for 6 hours when your ice cream craves kicking in? Well, voila here it is.. vegan ice cream!

Do You Know that New York is The Birthplace of Ice Cream Sundae?

"On Sunday afternoon, April 3,1892, after services at the Unitarian Church, Reverend John M. Scott paid his usual visit to the Platt & Colt Pharmacy in downtown Ithaca, New York. Shop proprietor, Chester C. Platt, was church treasurer and he met often with Scott for conversation after services. Seeking refreshment for himself and the reverend, Platt asked his fountain clerk, DeForest Christiance, for two bowls of ice cream. But instead of serving the reverend plain vanilla, Platt took the bowls and topped each with cherry syrup and a candied cherry. The finished dish looked delightful and tasted delicious—so much so that the men felt obliged to name the new creation. After some debate, Scott suggested that it be named for the day it was created. Platt concurred and the first "Cherry Sunday" was born."
That's the story behind Ithaca's sundae which took place in 1892. Since then, the popularity of ice cream sundae grew worldwide.  There are other claims of sundae ownership. However, only Ithaca so far can compile the most evidence to support their claim.
  • Newspaper Article, Ithaca Daily Journal, April 11, 1892

  • Newspaper Ad, Ithaca Daily Journal, April 5, 1892

Hmmm.. I wonder if the ice cream sundae in Ithaca is more delicious than in other place. Anyone wants to go there with me?

Luxurious Dessert: Foie Gras Ice Cream

I guess New Yorkers are very experimental and unafraid in composing new type of foods because OddFellows Ice Cream just secretly launched their newest flavor, Foie Gras Ice Cream! Yes, this foie gras ice cream is not on the menu but just directly ask the waiter for it. OddFellows Ice Cream is popular for their strange ice cream flavor such as maple bacon and such. However, who would have thought that the combination of creamy ice cream and duck liver would actually work? Props to the man behind this concept!

I have not tried this ice cream but according to the thrillist article written by Andrew Zimmer, this ice cream tastes just like vanilla ice cream with peanut butter and coco caramel twist plus a little hint of meaty flavor. Hmm meaty flavor! Intriguing right? Another interesting note is that you can only order 1 scoop per person. I guess the person behind this is not only smart in making the ice cream concept but also marketing concept! Can't wait to try!

Mochi ice cream! Who doesn't love the hybrid between Japanese sweet sticky rice and ice cream? While mochi has been very famous since a long time ago in Asia, this new hybrid is relatively new. You can almost find mochi ice cream anywhere including in my favorite grocery store, Trader's Joe. However, if you want to taste unique flavor mochi ice cream then you have to head to Smorgasburg in Brooklyn this weekend and find Sweet Fusion NYC booth there.

Sweet Fusion NYC offers many artisanal frozen mochi's such as: fresh mint chocolate chip, coffee candied bacon ice creams, white peach, cherry passion fruit sorbets and many more. One ball of mochi ice cream is only $5 and the size is quite big! So what are you waiting for? Head there now before summer completely goes out!

Andy's Italian Ice Truck

Photos by: http://www.snackfixation.com
Italian ice is not exactly ice cream because there is no milk inside. However, it is one of the most favorite frozen desserts for many people. So I guess it will be interesting to talk about italian ice. There is only one famous italian ice truck in NYC and that is Andy's Italian Ice.

Andy's does not only have water ice but also creme ice, coffee and tea service. Creme ice is more like ice cream with smooth and creamy texture but with fewer calories, dairy-free, low-carb, cholesterol-free, gluten-free, void of trans-fats, have no sodium. Sounds like a good substitute for ice cream when you are on diet right? Why do they have less calories? Because they do not use milk obviously. They also have some sugar-free flavors which are made with agave syrup.

Another cool factor from this ice cream truck is that all of the ices are handmade and affordable. There are 3 sizes of ice here: kiddie size for $3, regular for $4 and large is $5. They also have many variety of flavors and some of them are very unique like margarita, bubble gum or red bull!
