Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Did you all have food coma yesterday? Well.. I sure did. Could not help but stuffing my face with turkeys, brussel sprouts and everything yummy. Unfortunately, I did not have this turkey ice cream from Baskin Robbins cause I just knew about this yesterday! Ugh..

Well Baskin Robbins is offering ice cream Turkey Cake to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday this year. The cake is “glazed” with Caramel Praline Topping and is decorated with sugar cone legs, and can be customized with a guest’s favorite ice cream flavor. Hm.. I think cookies and cream flavor would go very well with the caramel praline topping! This cake can serve up to 16 people and retail for $32.99. Baskin Robbins also has mini turkey ice cream and offered it d in a family-friendly 4-pack for $12.99. Isn't it perfect? Now when can I have another excuse to gobble up this treat?

Syracuse University Got Their Own Ice Cream Flavor!

Yup! Syracuse University now has their own ice cream flavor called Otto's Cupcake. A 2012 graduate of SU, Eilish Mitchell, teamed up with Perry's Ice Cream to create this sweet concoction of chocolate cake ice cream with orange-colored frosting swirls and pieces of chocolate cupcake.

Making this ice cream was not an easy task. Mitchell had to develop the perfect orange frosting that matches the official orange color which is Pantone 1655. She also fought for the ice cream to get the product's SKU number to be 1144, in honor of famed jersey No. 44. I have to say this is a very well thought ice cream creation!

The flavor was approved by the university this fall and can be found at Fifi's Ice Cream Stand at 3021 James Street and A-La-Mode at 331 Nottingham Road, both in Syracuse, NY. Isn't this cool? So when is NYU going to get our own ice cream flavor?

Do-It-Yourself Sundae at The General

Cr: http://nypost.com
NYC is full of Korean BBQ restaurant which is famous for their "cook your own foods" serving style. But not only foods, now you can also have "make your own sundae" ice cream at The General restaurant in Bowery.

DIY Sundae ($18) is a four-tier tower of fixings for two with many toppings such as peanut butter, Oreo-brownie bits, coconut-almond biscotti, cake crunchies reminiscent of Carvel’s, caramelized street nuts and a spicy cherry compote on top.

Hmm.. frankly speaking, I am not sure I will go to this place just to get the DIY sundae though. I mean, I could make this myself at home, right? But well, if any of you want to have fun with your friends making ice cream sundae then you might want to head to this place!

Stretchy and Chewy Turkish Ice Cream!

Cr: www.chicagotribune.com
My first encounter with Turkish ice cream happened almost a year ago in Turkey. I saw many Turkish ice cream stalls on the streets and got intrigued so I bought it. Turned out Turkish ice cream is different from the usual ice cream because it is so chewy and thick that you can cut it with fork!

Different from the usual ice cream, Turkish ice cream is made with the addition of mastic resin and salep powder. These two  change the structure of the ice cream and lower its melting point. Turkish ice cream makers also use large paddles to knead the ice cream to build on the elasticity. So that's the secret of why Turkish ice cream has stretchy and chewy texture!

Too bad in NYC there are not many places where you can get Turkish ice cream. The only place I know is Victory Garden in West Village. Do you guys know where else to buy Turkish ice cream? Please do let me know because I have been craving for it!

Chili chocolate ice cream sandwich?

Yup you can get that at this placed called Melt Bakery! Actually, that is one of the most famous flavors there! Guess New Yorkers are experimental ice cream eater huh? So.. Thai Fighter $4 (yeah they call it that) is chili chocolate ice cream sandwiched between crisp-chewy curry coconut cookies. Interesting huh?

But if you want to try other flavors, they have many flavors include Thick Mint, a pairing of peppermint ice cream with crackly chocolate cookies or Cinnamax, with cinnamon ice cream and snickerdoodle cookies. Check out their website to find out more about the flavors!

Flavors aside, I think the coolest thing about this bakery is that they have many type of cookie textures. You can choose from crunchy to plush to chewy! And they also do delivery! With minimum of 12 ice cream sandwiches. So.. what are you waiting for? Order away!

Pretty Gelato at Amorino

Amorino is one of my favorite places in New York for many reasons:

1. The ice cream is pretty and yummy!
How often do you see such a pretty ice cream like this huh? Not only pretty, this chrysanthemums-shaped technique is actually created to allow customers to try up to 22 flavors in a single shot! Pretty crazy huh? Well, personally I never order more than 4 flavors but maybe next time I should order for 22 flavors just to test the technique lol.

2. High quality ingredients with no artificial coloring!
I have been quite concern about what goes into my mouth so I love the fact that Amorino uses no artificial, unhealthy ingredients. All fruit sorbets are made with fresh fruit like Mango Alfonso d’India (Mango), Lampone Willamette (Raspberry) and Fragola (Strawberry), Limone (Lemon). You can also have them in a cup, waffle, focaccino or a cone.

3. Amorino is just around the corner from NYU
Oh yeah!

Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream from Ron Burgundy of Anchorman

Cr: http://www.huffingtonpost.com

To all "Anchorman" fans out there! Ben & Jerry's just revealed its newest ice cream flavor "Scotchy Scotch Scotch" dedicated for the movie "Anchorman" in New York yesterday. This ice cream flavor is made in honor of Ron Burgundy, the main character from the movie "Anchorman." He all know he loves scotch and that's why this ice cream has butterscotch ice cream base with ribbons of butterscotch swirl. Sounds really delicious right? But unfortunately, we have to wait for few more weeks to get our hands on these pints in stores. This is a part of marketing move for "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" which will hit theaters on December 20th. Just perfect for Christmas! Let's hope they will make this flavor permanent!

New from Umami Burger: Donut Ice Cream Sandwich

Cr: foodbeast.com
Oh God! My list of "Things-to-eat in New York" is getting longer and longer. Umami Burger, which just opened few months ago in New York, just unveiled their new dessert item which is.. "Donut Ice Cream Sandwich". Mean.. mean.. mean.. This is a result of collaboration between L.A. Creamery Ice Cream and Stan’s Donuts in Southern California.

There are 3 flavors you can try:
  1. Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream with a Jelly Doughnut. This is peanut butter and jelly ice cream sandwiched between a jelly donut. Hm.. interesting choice of flavor right?
  2. Chocolate Ganache Ice Cream with Chocolate Peanut Butter Donuts.
  3. Cinnamon Toast Ice Cream with a Cinnamon Roll and Chocolate Chips. Not a donut but.. who can resist cinnamon roll??
You can get the donut for $8 in New York and for $6 in SoCal. Yes, the donut is more expensive in New York *sigh* but who could blame them?

Where to Get Vegan Ice Cream in New York?

Being a vegan in New York is relatively easier compared to being a vegan in.. let's say.. Arizona. Everywhere you go there is always something to satisfy your vegan craves and that includes ice cream. There are plenty places in New York City where you can get vegan ice cream. Here is the list!

1. Ciao Bella
Here you can try up to 22 unique flavors of vegan sorbet sweetened with evaporated cane juice. What's even more exciting is that you can buy it by the scoop or by the pint.
2. Van Leeuwen
They have 2 vegan ice creams here: “Michel Cluizel chocolate” and “Cold Ground, Oak Barrel Aged” vanilla. The classic vanilla and chocolate. I have tried the chocolate one and it was yummy!

3. Klein's Ice Cream House
Located in Brooklyn, this ice cream parlor is famous for their many flavors of vegan ice cream. They have 2 options: soft serve (vanilla and chocolate) and hard ice cream. The idea of having vegan ice cream is because of the kosher diet. If you are on kosher diet and you had meat, you have to wait for another six hours before eating diary. But who wants to wait for 6 hours when your ice cream craves kicking in? Well, voila here it is.. vegan ice cream!

Do You Know that New York is The Birthplace of Ice Cream Sundae?

"On Sunday afternoon, April 3,1892, after services at the Unitarian Church, Reverend John M. Scott paid his usual visit to the Platt & Colt Pharmacy in downtown Ithaca, New York. Shop proprietor, Chester C. Platt, was church treasurer and he met often with Scott for conversation after services. Seeking refreshment for himself and the reverend, Platt asked his fountain clerk, DeForest Christiance, for two bowls of ice cream. But instead of serving the reverend plain vanilla, Platt took the bowls and topped each with cherry syrup and a candied cherry. The finished dish looked delightful and tasted delicious—so much so that the men felt obliged to name the new creation. After some debate, Scott suggested that it be named for the day it was created. Platt concurred and the first "Cherry Sunday" was born."
That's the story behind Ithaca's sundae which took place in 1892. Since then, the popularity of ice cream sundae grew worldwide.  There are other claims of sundae ownership. However, only Ithaca so far can compile the most evidence to support their claim.
  • Newspaper Article, Ithaca Daily Journal, April 11, 1892

  • Newspaper Ad, Ithaca Daily Journal, April 5, 1892

Hmmm.. I wonder if the ice cream sundae in Ithaca is more delicious than in other place. Anyone wants to go there with me?

Luxurious Dessert: Foie Gras Ice Cream

I guess New Yorkers are very experimental and unafraid in composing new type of foods because OddFellows Ice Cream just secretly launched their newest flavor, Foie Gras Ice Cream! Yes, this foie gras ice cream is not on the menu but just directly ask the waiter for it. OddFellows Ice Cream is popular for their strange ice cream flavor such as maple bacon and such. However, who would have thought that the combination of creamy ice cream and duck liver would actually work? Props to the man behind this concept!

I have not tried this ice cream but according to the thrillist article written by Andrew Zimmer, this ice cream tastes just like vanilla ice cream with peanut butter and coco caramel twist plus a little hint of meaty flavor. Hmm meaty flavor! Intriguing right? Another interesting note is that you can only order 1 scoop per person. I guess the person behind this is not only smart in making the ice cream concept but also marketing concept! Can't wait to try!

The Sweet, Sticky and Chewy Mochi Ice Cream

Mochi ice cream! Who doesn't love the hybrid between Japanese sweet sticky rice and ice cream? While mochi has been very famous since a long time ago in Asia, this new hybrid is relatively new. You can almost find mochi ice cream anywhere including in my favorite grocery store, Trader's Joe. However, if you want to taste unique flavor mochi ice cream then you have to head to Smorgasburg in Brooklyn this weekend and find Sweet Fusion NYC booth there.

One ball of mochi ice cream is only $5 and the size is quite big! So what are you waiting for? Head there now before summer completely goes out!

Andy's Italian Ice Truck

Photos by: http://www.snackfixation.com
Italian ice is not exactly ice cream because there is no milk inside. However, it is one of the most favorite frozen desserts for many people. So I guess it will be interesting to talk about italian ice. There is only one famous italian ice truck in NYC and that is Andy's Italian Ice.

Andy's does not only have water ice but also creme ice, coffee and tea service. Creme ice is more like ice cream with smooth and creamy texture but with fewer calories, dairy-free, low-carb, cholesterol-free, gluten-free, void of trans-fats, have no sodium. Sounds like a good substitute for ice cream when you are on diet right? Why do they have less calories? Because they do not use milk obviously. They also have some sugar-free flavors which are made with agave syrup.

Another cool factor from this ice cream truck is that all of the ices are handmade and affordable. There are 3 sizes of ice here: kiddie size for $3, regular for $4 and large is $5. They also have many variety of flavors and some of them are very unique like margarita, bubble gum or red bull!

Eddie's Sweet Shop, The Authentic Forest Hills Ice Cream Parlor

Forest Hills is my favorite neighborhood in Queens. Everything seems much more "normal" and laid back there. You can feel the sense of tight community there. I just love it! Well, much to my delight, I just learned that in Forest Hills, there is this one authentic ice cream parlor that opened in 1909 and still preserve its old-time feel. It is called Eddie's Sweet Shop.

Not only that their ice cream and whipped creams are handmade (like what old people used to make), the ambiance of the store is also very old fashioned. Once you enter, you will be greeted with mosaic tile floor and wooden swivel tools. You will feel like you are being transported back to the 1920s.

As for the ice cream, they are most famous for its banana splits ice cream with enormous amount of whipped cream put on top. I went there few days ago and ordered the Banana Royal Sundae. I picked 3 ice cream flavors; vanilla, butter pecan and mint chip. Let me tell you, the sundae was so good! The ice cream was very creamy and not overly sweet!! Love it love it love. If only their place was not so far from my place.

But they also have other menus like sundae, floats, egg cream, milk shakes. This place is also great if you want to have "make your own sundae party". The package start at $300. Isn't it fun to have your birthday celebrated with many scoops of ice crea, hot fudge and chocolate sauce? Yumm!

Bagel Ice Cream: Molecular Gastronomy Take on Ice Cream

If you think bagel ice cream is like macaron ice cream I wrote yesterday, you are dead wrong! Bagel ice cream is not bagel with ice cream as its filling. But this is BAGEL-FLAVORED ICE CREAM in a shape of bagel. Amazing right??

The creator of this whimsical creation is Chef Wylie Dufresne from molecular gastronomy restaurant, WD~50 in Lower East Side. FYI, Molecular gastronomy is the rising trend in culinary industry which chefs that combine both sensory and food science to transform flavors and presentations of their foods creation. To create these molecular gastronomy foods, the chefs use both science lab equipment and traditional cooking utensils.

Just like any other molecular gastronomy foods, the process of making this bagel ice cream is also rather complicated. According to an article in nymag.com, first WD~50 toasted everything bagels, crushed into pieces, soaked in hot milk and strained it to get bagel-flavored milk. Then they turned that milk into ice cream. That's why the bagel ice cream has the flavor of poppy seeds, sesame seeds and union in it. To make the ice cream looks like bagel, it is put in a savarin mold and later got airbrushed to get the toasted bagel look. For the presentation, the bagel ice cream is served with smoked salmon thread and crispy cream cheese (yup.. crispy cream cheese).

I have not been there, but after doing research for this article, I am so tempted to make reservation soon and try this bagel ice cream!

Let's Celebrate Mid Autumn Festival with Ice Cream Mooncake!

2 days ago was Mid Autumn Festival that's celebrated by Chinese and Taiwanese people all over the world. But do you know what is Mid Autumn Festival? According to travelchinaguide.com,
Falling on the 15th day of the 8th month according to the Chinese lunar calendar, the Mid-Autumn Festival is the second grandest festival after the Spring Festival in China. It takes its name from the fact that it is always celebrated in the middle of the autumn season. The day is also known as the Moon Festival, as at that time of the year the moon is at its roundest and brightest.
People usually celebrate the occasion by dancing, eating and moon gazing. There is one particular menu they eat that day which is MOONCAKE!

This paragraph from NPR article by Mallory Yu may describe it best:
Mooncakes are about the size and heft of a hockey puck, with a thin crust. A dense rich filling of sweetened lotus seed paste envelops the yolk from a salted duck egg. The salty, crunchy yolk crumbles when cut and contrasts with the almost cloying sweetness around it. The yolk isn't my favorite part, so my mother gets most of what ends up in my portion. Mooncake fillings are almost always sweet and can be made with different nuts, seeds or beans.
However, nowadays people are getting more creative and people from Haagen Dasz launched this ice cream mooncake!

The base is praline with  mango sorbet “yolk” at the center. Small mooncake retails for $16.95. Go run to Haagen Dasz Chinatown now to get this unique ice cream cake!

Address: 77 Bayard St. (between Mulberry and Mott Sts.), (212) 571-1970. Haagen-dazs.com.

So what makes this sundae so expensive?
This is the description from Serendipity 3:
“5 scoops of the richest Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream infused with Madagascar vanilla and covered in 23K edible gold leaf, the sundae is drizzled with the world’s most expensive chocolate, Amedei Porceleana, and covered with chunks of rare Chuao chocolate, which is from cocoa beans harvested by the Caribbean Sea on Venezuela’s coast. The masterpiece is suffused with exotic candied fruits from Paris, gold dragets, truffles and Marzipan Cherries. It is topped with a tiny glass bowl of Grand Passion Caviar, an exclusive dessert caviar, made of salt-free American Golden caviar, known for its sparkling golden color.
